At age 25, with $40 to her name, Vivian Yang left her full-time position as a Shanghai university lecturer to pursue the American Dream. She began learning to write creatively in English in her thirties, thanks partly to fellowships and grants from Columbia University, New Jersey State Council on the Arts, and The Bread Loaf Writers' Conference.

 

From an Asia-native's perspective, Vivian’s immigration stories are set in America, Asia, Australasia, and Europe. They feature original immigrant characters of diverse backgrounds - Caucasian, Eurasian, Hong Kong Chinese, Japanese, mainland Chinese, Russian-American, Shanghainese, Soviets, Western expatriates in Asia, and mainland Chinese immigrants to British-Hong Kong, New York, Sydney, and Tokyo. She has been a literary arts mentor (fiction; non-fiction) for the New York Foundation for the Arts' Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program since 2014.

 

As well as being an author, university lecturer, and literary arts mentor, Vivian has been a journalist, public speaker, TV commentator, Wall Street and Madison Avenue professional, and a Mandarin Chinese instructor in the U.S. and Asia.

楊薇1960年代生長于上海, 在民國時期幾度出任政府財政總長 , 被誉为"近現代中國傳奇財經人物" 的著名爱國民主人士, 佛門大善士和書法家的曾祖李思浩身邊由外婆李蘭雲帶大, 與之感情笃深, 且從小受長輩文化和艺术的熏陶, 耳聞目睹其言行為人和畢生為國為民的宽阔襟懷。文革中, 外公 M. L. Feng 1930年代在美國賓夕法尼亞大學沃頓商學院  (The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania) 研究院留學的經歷受到了抨擊。母校同是被称为“東方哈佛”的原上海聖約翰大學英文系 (St. John’s University, Shanghai) 和復旦大學外文系 (Fudan University) 的父,  母都被在各自任教的復旦大學和華東師範大學下放到＂五七幹校＂務農。懵懂無知的她每周寫信給遠方的親人，無意中開始了她自學中文的經歷以及日後英語文學創作的素材積累。1978年,当时还是中學生的楊薇遇到父母聖約翰大學校友董鼎山, 董樂山俩舅舅後, 對寫作的興趣倍增。80年代中期,  外婆李蘭雲為祖國統一大業向張學良，趙一荻伉儷做統戰工作，與原天津中西女子中學 (McTyeire School for Girls) 閨蜜陸靜嫣, 吳靖聯名撰寫《草長鶯飛春暮，懷人風雨江南 - 懷念在台灣的四妹趙一荻》一文時, 已在上海外國語大學教英語和新聞傳播的楊薇義不容辭地了當上她老人家的助手。該文章發表後在港台和海外有很大反響。
